History

Chester Haugen began hauling grain in 1959 from Minnesota and North Dakota to the Duluth/Superior ports.

In 1966 Chester Haugen “Swede” started C.D. Haugen, Inc.  The Company continued to haul grain and also coal in the winter months.  Swede generally operated with a Fleet of 12-15 trucks through the years.  Doug, after working in the shop for some time decided in 1978 to buy a truck and start hauling grain for the Company.

By 1980 the grain business had slowed down to the point it was hard to keep everyone working.  Doug left the Company and began hauling flatbed freight over the road.  In 1982 Doug returned to the Company and he and his dad decided to start hauling flatbed freight from the two wood plants in Bemidji, Minnesota.

Doug leased his truck and trailer on with the Company and Swede bought two flatbeds for the Company to pull.  Doug became the dispatcher for eleven grain trucks and three over the road flatbed trucks.

Over the years the Company continued to grow its flatbed business and moved in a different direction from the early years.

Swede retired in 1989 and Doug took over as President. Swede continued to be active in the Company throughout his retirement years and would always help with whatever was needed.

As time went on, the Company also expanded into hauling Step Deck Freight throughout the United States and parts of Canada.

In 2005 the Company built a new facility that offers more space for the fleet, a truck wash bay, drivers shower to use and a TV & coffee area for everyone to enjoy.

From the grain hauling days that began in 1959 with a couple of trucks C.D. Haugen, Inc. now operates with a fleet of 40 units hauling building materials throughout the United States and parts of Canada.
